Beckett | Poems
“if you do not love me I shall not be loved
if I do not love you I shall not love”
In a very rare opportunity, some of Samuel Beckett’s most renowned “love poems” are given a performed reading by the near-legendary actor Tom Hickey, dance artist Justine Cooper and actress Brenda McSweeney at the Ardhowen Theatre this weekend. Austere, haunting and beautiful, Beckett’s elegiac poems are far too often forgotten or overlooked and BECKETT | POEMS, directed by Alan Gilsenan, returns them to us – stark, eloquent and unsettling. Among those included are: I would like my love to die, Cascando, Brief Dream, my way is in the sand flowing and Dieppe.
Alan Gilsenan is a writer, director and filmmaker. His film work includesThe Hospice (which he also wrote), Paul Durcan: The Dark School and The Yellow Bittern: the Life and Times of Liam Clancy.
