A Piece of Monologue is a short 15 minute play, a dead-of-night soliloquy on the brevity of life and the proximity of death.  Beckett wrote it following a request for a ‘play about death’ by the actor David Warrilow who starred in the premiere in the Annex at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, New York in 1979.  The ‘speaker’ of the play is unable to sleep and in his memory he sees images from the past.  Thoughts fleetingly illuminate the darkness.  On this occasion the play will be performed 50 metres under earth in the Marble Arch Caves.  A restricted audience of 30 at a time travel into the caves by underground boat and so have the opportunity to experience this rarely-performed play in the most extraordinary of settings.

The Blue Raincoat Theatre actor Ciaran McCauley reprises his hugely acclaimed performance in Sligo in 2017.  This is a unique experiential event with only two performances each evening across three nights.

* The festival has presented two previous events down the Marble Arch Caves – its memorable three-part Inferno, with Not I by Lisa Dwan included, in 2013 and the Merce Cunningham dance excerpts from his Roaratorio performed by the Dylan Quinn Dance Company in 2015.
