Donegal, Here I Come! Lughnasa FrielFest

The Yalta Game is based on a theme in the Anton Chekhov short story The Lady with the Little Dog by Anton Chekhov.   Like that story, Friel’s play is set in Yalta, a Black Sea resort for summering Muscovites.  In the festival’s rehearsed reading, Moville stands in for Yalta, both seaside resorts with waterside promenades for strolling, both former ports and fishing settlements.  Where Chekhov looked out from his house in Yalta, The White Dacha, across the Black Sea to Turkey, Friel wrote The Yalta Gamejust a few kilometres from Moville looking across to Northern Ireland.
