This very special world premiere production commissioned for our 2016 Paris Beckett Festival returns once more with Lyon-based Irish actress Clara Simpson performing Beckett’s Pas Moi and Not I in succession without a gap, a stunning coup de theatre, this time in the little chapel attic of Beckett’s old school (Portora) with its Quaker-like wooden chairs where Beckett and his brother Willie would have often sat in contemplation.

Not I is a haunting piece, a sonic masterpiece, in which an unnamed woman, visible only by her mouth, reflects on her life in a torrent of words.  To hear Beckett’s two languages side by side in one sitting with, as Clara puts it, ‘no transition , one language weaving into the other, to become a single piece’ is as intense and mind-blowing a thirty minutes as you will experience in a theatre.

In 2010 in a Corn Echange Production, Clara played Winnie in Happy Days directed by Annie Ryan. Previous Festival Not I productions included Lisa Dwan at Portora Royal School (Beckett’s School) in 2012 and the Marble Arch Caves as part of the INFERNO triptych in 2013.
